Districts and retail centres across the borough are benefitting from a number of improvements, thanks to funding from the Government’s Welcome Back Fund.
The funding, which also includes ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) funding, to reduce economic and social disparity, was awarded to Local Authorities in recognition of the impact of Covid-19 on the local high street and the need to support local businesses by creating a safe and welcoming environment.
Improvements include graffiti removal, repairing broken street furniture, removing weeds and debris and cutting back shrubbery to create a more pedestrian friendly environment.
During the pandemic, local centres became a lifeline to so many with more and more people supporting and seeing the value of shopping and doing business locally. The work has capitalised on their growing popularity and will offer an improved look and feel as people return to support their local high street.
Cllr David Meller, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: “This funding has given a real boost to some of our local high streets and business community, who deserve our support more than ever right now. This complements the great work of Our Economic Recovery Campaign in partnership with One Stockport, to get our borough’s businesses booming again.”
The work also supports all the good community clean-up activities that take place across the borough and we welcome similar input from any other interested community organisations
