The campaign is run by New Family Social and this year’s theme is “Be The Change”.
In Stockport there is a need for foster carers to come forward to offer foster homes to older children and siblings and the campaign will be to encourage LGBT+ individuals and couples to come forward to consider fostering with Stockport Council and find out more about the route they can follow into parenting.
Local foster carers James and Stephen have been fostering teenagers and siblings for Stockport Council for the last 7 years recall: “We were uncertain about how being in a same-sex relationship would affect us becoming foster carers. However, the system doesn’t discriminate. Stockport Council were so supportive. The young people we work with are totally appreciative of the help and care they get.
“Our sexuality doesn’t even come into it. We have enough room for three children and we wanted to be flexible. My parents have been foster carers for a few years so Stephen and I always wanted to follow suit. Seven years ago we decided we’d do something about it! It’s very rewarding to see the change in the children, even after a short period of time, it’s fantastic!”
Councillor Colin Foster Stockport Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Family Services & Education said: “We know from experience that LGBT+ people often come to fostering with an open mind and real enthusiasm, as their first choice for building a family. Many of our children have had a very traumatic start to life and we have seen them thrive with their new LGBT+ parents.
“Like most areas across the country we are in particular need of foster carers for older children and sibling groups and we are always interested in hearing from anyone who is thinking of considering fostering to contact the Council for more information.”
The fostering team are holding a virtual information and Q&A session for LGBT+ individuals to come and meet local foster carers and talk about becoming a foster carer with Stockport Council. The Q&A sessions are held online every month on a Wednesday and the next events are taking place on Wednesday 6 April and Wednesday 27 April starting at 6pm.
If you would like to know more about fostering please visit the website or call the recruitment team on 0161 474 3400 to find out more about the council’s Q&A information sessions.
