Stockport celebrates Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Preparations are well underway for the celebrations of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

To mark the occasion, there will be two bank holidays on 2nd and 3rd June, to allow a four-day weekend for residents and communities to join together and celebrate this major milestone.

Keep checking the council newsroom for more information that will be added about the celebrations for the Jubilee in Stockport as we approach this historic date.

Street Parties

If you would like to host a street party, please use this application form to apply for road closures. Please note that this form does not cover licensing, so if you would like to sell alcohol in a commercial capacity at your street party, please contact us separately.

You can view the general street party guidance here. Risk assessment information can be found on the street parties webpage.

Your local ward councillors will be provided with roundels to hang on lamp posts (like the large poppies in previous years), to help with the celebrations!

Beacon lighting

As part of the national beacon lighting programme, over 1500 beacons will be lit at the same time across the UK and overseas territories – and Stockport is going to be one of them! Come down to the market place to see the beacon lit at 9.45pm on 2nd June, the time at which all beacons will be lit across the country.

Celebrations in the Town Centre

Across the Jubilee weekend, there will be several events across the town centre and Underbanks area. These will be family-friendly, so you can bring the whole family along!

This page will be updated with further information nearer the time.
To encourage residents to come down and enjoy the fun, all on street parking and parking in all council-owned car parks will be free throughout the weekend, from 2nd – 5th June.

Celebrations at the Town Hall

The Town Hall will be lit up in purple to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee from 2nd – 5th June. The council will also be flying the official Jubilee flag above the town hall for the duration of the weekend.

A Jubilee Trail at Stockport Museums

Stockport museums will be hosting a Jubilee trail throughout the week leading up to The Queen’s Jubilee weekend. Come along and discover Stockport’s rich local history, and go on a journey through the history of the Queen’s reign. Check the newsroom to find out more in due course.

Tree planting

To commemorate the Platinum Jubilee, we will be continuing to support the Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting initiative. The Mayor will plant a tree at the town hall, and a tree will be provided to every school in the borough. This will take place in November 2022 to coincide with the best time to plant new trees. Each tree will be provided with a commemorative plaque marking the Jubilee.

It should be a fantastic occasion, and a chance to be part of some real history being made across the world, the country and in Stockport. Please do keep an eye on our news pages for more upcoming information about specific events.
