Smalling moving to Roma permanently

Former United defender signs with Serie A club for £18 million

Defender Chris Smalling will not be returning to Old Trafford after all.

The 30-year-old signed with Roma for £18 million for three years with an option for an extra year.

He was impressive in 37 appearances for Roma last season on loan from Old Trafford.

The Reds had eight centre-backs on the squad including Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and academy product Teden Mengi.

The team also announced the signing of defender Alex Telles earlier in the day.

Smalling says: “My head and my heart has always been in Rome. I am delighted to now be yours. Daje Roma!”

“Everyone at Manchester United would like to thank Chris for his years of service, dedication, and professionalism, and wish him all the best for his future,” United said in a statement.

He won 2 EPL titles, to go along with an FA Cup, a Europa League title, and 3 FA Community Shields with United. (JSL)
