Two Manchester Metropolitan sport scholars are celebrating success on the global stage after winning medals at major international championship.
Ela Letton-Jones and Bruce Dee both secured silver medals at the World Para Swimming Championships 2025 held in Singapore.
Ela Letton-Jones made her debut on the international stage, bagging a silver in the women’s 100m backstroke. This marks her first appearance at a major global competition, and her performance has already positioned her as one of Britain’s rising starts in para swimming.
Ela said: “I had a really good experience and I’m so pleased to come back with a silver medal. The championships were different to anything I’ve done before and has made me more motivated.
“I’m excited to compete in some new events at BUCS. I’m hoping to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in 2026, it will be great to represent Wales.”
Bruce Dee, who narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the 2024 Paralympic Games, returned stronger for this competition. He earned a silver medal in the mixed 4x100m medley relay. Bruce’s progression from fourth place at the Paralympics to second at the World Championships shows his commitment to the GB team.
Bruce said: “I’m looking forward to hopefully qualifying for Commonwealth Games and for Europe. I’m hopeful we can try to get Manchester Met to win BUCS.”
Kieran Williams, another Manchester Met sports scholar, also competed in this World Para Swimming Championships.
Ela, Bruce and Kieran are all athletes part of Manchester Met’s Sport Scholarship Programme, which supports talented student-athletes in balancing these academic sporting ambitions.
Chloe Golding, Performance Sport Officer at Manchester Met, said: “We are really proud of our students and their performances this summer. They massively stepped up considering they are all fairly new to the senior world stage and have been excellent ambassadors for the sport scholarship programme and then university. We are looking forward to supporting their sporting and academic careers while they study with us and train with Aquatics GB.”
