City to face Borussia Mönchengladbach in Round of 16

Champions League knockout stage resumes February 24

Manchester City will face Borussia Mönchengladbach in the knockout stage of the Champions League.

The German side made it through the group stage of the competition finishing second behind Real Madrid.

They beat out Inter Milan and FC Shakhtar Donetsk, beating the latter by a combined score of 10-0 in two group matches.

The Colts as they’re sometimes called are the only team in the Bundesliga this season to beat RB Leipzig.

Currently, they sit in eighth place in the league standings after finishing fourth a season ago.

City goes into this matchup full of confidence as Pep Guardiola’s side finished the Champions League group stage with 16 points.

They only conceded one goal in the entire group stage.

Following the draw, Guardiola gave his thoughts about facing the German side next.

“I learned a lot when I was in Germany how big and important and historic they are as a team,” said Guardiola.

“It is a club that I respect a lot, the quality and beauty of their football. To go through in a group with Shakhtar, Inter, and Real with two exceptional games against Shakhtar.”

Guardiola managed Bayern Munich for three seasons in Germany before moving to Manchester.

The Spaniard adds that properly preparing for this match will be critical.

“The only concern I have is to arrive in the best condition possible in February against them,” he said.

“I saw the highlights, I didn’t see much of them properly and we start to work on this from now on.”

The first leg takes place at Borussia-Park on February 24.

The return leg at Etihad Stadium is scheduled for March 16.
