The ambitious transformation of Oldham Town Centre has taken another major step forward, with planning applications now submitted for six key sites as part of the Oldham Town Living regeneration proje

Following extensive community consultation in February, Muse and Oldham Council have now finalised the proposals for these sites, reflecting on the feedback received. The submission of these applications mark a significant milestone in delivering high-quality new homes, vibrant public spaces, and exciting commercial opportunities in the heart of Oldham.

The six sites – Prince’s Gate, the Former Magistrate’s Court, the Former Manchester Chambers, the Former Leisure Centre, the Civic Centre, and the Civic Tower – form the foundation of a long-term vision to create a thriving and sustainable town centre that will deliver up to 2,000 new homes. These plans build on the principles set out in the Oldham Town Living Development Framework, which was shaped through a 7-week community conversation in summer 2024. The final document was endorsed by Oldham Council in November 2024.

Through the consultation, wide ranging feedback was received including site-specific comments as well as suggestions to improve and enhance the overall redevelopment of the town centre. Key themes emerging included design, parking, traffic, accessibility and safety, which have been carefully reviewed and considered by the project team.

Alex Vogel, Senior Development Manager at Muse, said:

“The submission of these planning applications marks a major step forward in delivering our vision for Oldham town centre. Since the public consultation, we have carefully considered feedback from the community and wider stakeholder to shape our proposals, so that they create an exciting and inclusive future for everybody in Oldham.

“We’re committed to working in partnership with Oldham Council to transform the town centre into a place that people want to live, work, and visit.

“I want to thank the everybody who took the time to share their comments, big or small. It was great to hear from so many people and every suggestion helps us shape our plans to make Oldham even better.

“We’re excited to be in the position where our plans have now been submitted, and we move forward to the next phase of the project.”

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, added:

“This is an exciting moment for Oldham. These applications reflect the ambition we have for our town centre, bringing forward high-quality homes and new spaces that people can be proud of.

“We’ve taken the time to listen to the community, ensuring these plans reflect their needs and aspirations. Now, as we take the next step in this journey, we remain committed to delivering a town centre that works for everyone.”

Over a 15-year partnership, the Oldham Town Living regeneration project is set to deliver up to 2,000 new homes across the town centre, unlocking nearly 10 hectares of brownfield land.

The submission of these planning applications follows months of detailed design and engagement, ensuring that proposals are both ambitious and responsive to local priorities.
