Back where it belongs
A piece of Manchester City is coming back.
Club owner, His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed announced this week the purchase of the FA Cup.
It’s the original trophy given to the winning English clubs between 1896-1910.
The trophy has some major significance not only to the club but the city of Manchester.
City won that very same FA Cup back in 1904 when they defeated Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the final.
With that triumph City also became the first professional football club from Manchester to win a major honour.
The Cup will stay at the Football Museum in Manchester where fans from all over can enjoy it.
Many believe City’s triumph 116 years ago helped to establish football in the culture of Manchester.
Man City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak says: “This Cup is a visible reminder of the rich and long history of English football to which Manchester City is inextricably entwined.
“Winning this actual trophy in 1904 was a turning point for the Club and for the city of Manchester in that it firmly cemented football in the heart of its community.”
This November will mark the 150th anniversary of the FA Cup.
