A new café and innovative pilot scheme supporting people to gain supported work experience was officially opened last week by the Mayor of Wigan Borough.
Kenny G’s in Hindley offers residents the chance to get real-life work experience in a fully functioning café, helping them build confidence, independence and, ultimately, progress towards paid employment.
The new facility is delivered by One Vision Studios, a community-based learning and support provider.
Councillor Keith Cunliffe, cabinet portfolio holder for adults social care and health, said: “This is a really exciting initiative that One Vision are delivering in partnership with the council’s Supported Employment team and Family Hubs, part of a wider approach to create more community-based opportunities, empowering people to develop their skills in real-world settings in a safe supported environment.
“This type of support is about recognising the individual, their interests and aspirations, and supporting opportunities to learn new skills, make meaningful choices and take part in community life, and this is a fantastic example.
“The café is already supporting five people who are gaining hands‑on experience, and I am really looking forward to seeing this offer build and grow.”
Supported Employment is a personalised approach that helps people with disabilities gain skills, confidence and over time move into paid work. The team is working closely with the café and, when people are ready, providing tailored job coaching and guidance to ensure people are supported at every step.
Kevin Rosental, CEO of One Vision Studios, said: “Kenny G’s is more than just a café, this hub is a place of opportunity, growth, confidence building, and belonging. It represents a shared belief that everyone deserves the chance to learn, work, contribute, and thrive in a supportive environment.
“Our mission is to enable people of all abilities to gain meaningful work experiences that opens up pathways to paid employment, it’s a place of empowerment, independence, and community, bringing together people from all walks of life and providing hope and opportunity for all.
“We have been awarded £15k from the National Lottery to help us with fixtures and fittings, which has helped us develop a warm, welcoming, comfortable environment that we are proud of.”
Kenny G’s has found its home in the Family Hub at Mornington Road, an inclusive community café where local families can enjoy freshly prepared food and drink while supporting opportunities that make a real difference.
Family Hubs are one stop shops for the whole family, providing everything from pregnancy and early years support to help with housing, finances, mental health, and wider wellbeing with activities and events for all ages.
