The court heard that Gunning posed as a caring neighbor to gain the victim’s trust while he was taking his daily walk. Approaching the elderly man, Gunning offered assistance, claiming to be a new neighbor who had recently moved into the area.
Upon arriving at the victim’s home, Gunning forced his way inside, insisting on having a cup of tea and using the bathroom. Once inside, he rummaged through the victim’s bedroom before returning downstairs.
Gunning then forcibly removed the victim’s emergency bracelet, pinned him to the couch, and restrained his arms, rendering the elderly man unable to move. He threw the victim onto the floor and continued to search the property, eventually stealing £15 in cash, the victim’s keys, and the emergency bracelet. Gunning discarded the keys and bracelet in the porch, leaving the victim helpless on the floor of his own home.
This sentence reflects the severity of Gunning’s actions and the impact of his crime on the vulnerable victim.
