Change of Venues
Manchester City won’t be travelling to Germany for their upcoming Champions League match with Borussia Monchengladbach.
The German government has banned all UK arrivals because of the new COVID variant which originated in England.
The first leg of that Champions League encounter will now occur at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on February 24.
A statement from UEFA reads: “UEFA can confirm that the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg match between Borussia VfL 1900 Mönchengladbach and Manchester City FC will now take place at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. The date of the match (February 24 2021) and kick-off time (21:00 CET) will remain the same.
More Changes to come?
Unless things improve dramatically, that match won’t be the only one that’ll change venues.
Spain is also under travel restrictions because of the coronavirus variant.
As a result, it’s likely several Europa and Champions League matches this month will have to move to neutral sites.
That includes City’s arch-rivals Manchester United who take on Real Sociedad in the Europa League’s round of 32 later this month.
The Reds will face La Real at Anoeta in Spain on Thursday, February 18 but that’s likely to change.
Any team that couldn’t host the first-leg of their European cup tie had to tell UEFA by midnight on Monday. (JSL).
