A grassroots dance school recently welcomed Oldham Council Leader, Cllr Arooj Shah, and Deputy Mayor and ward councillor, Cllr Brian Hobin, for a visit to see the work they’re doing with young people.
The Elm Arts Company, a family-run dance school based in Failsworth, is home to a group of talented young dancers who have been selected to represent England at the Dance World Cup Finals in Spain this summer. Despite training in a space barely big enough to rehearse safely, the children (many from working-class families and receiving free school meals) continue to give their all every day.
Cllr Shah was invited by Cllr Hobin to meet the team and hear more about the challenges they’re facing.
Cllr Arooj Shah said: “What I saw at Elm was something truly special. These young people are full of talent, and the passion from the team behind them is clear. This is about more than dance; it’s about giving young people purpose and real chances in life.
I’m proud to support them and will do all I can to help them find the space and support they need to keep growing.”
Cllr Brian Hobin said: “Elm Arts are a fantastic group here in Failsworth, doing brilliant work with local children. Despite the limited space, the talent of the children and the passion of the staff really shine through. I wanted to highlight their work because they deserve proper support, and I’ll do all I can to help them get it.”
Elm was founded by a mother and daughter, later joined by their wider family, after experiencing first-hand the barriers that stop many children from accessing performing arts training. Their mission has always been to make sure no child misses out due to financial hardship or background.
Ferne Collins, Head of Talent Development, said: “Thank you to both Cllr Shah and Cllr Hobin for your kindness and for believing in these children. With your support, I truly believe we can build something that makes a real and lasting difference, for the children, their families and Oldham.”
Elm has already helped local children land roles in Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and West End productions, Matilda and Les Misérables. Yet the group still trains in a space that’s far too small for their growing needs.
The school is now urgently looking for:
- A larger venue to hold final rehearsals on key dates in June & July.
- Help with fundraising to reach their £51,000 target to cover Dance World Cup costs. You can support the group by donating or sharing their fundraiser here: Fundraiser by Laura Taylor-Deen : Elm Arts Company Representing England at The Dance World Cup.
- A long-term home. A proper building they can call their own and develop into a real community hub.
