Local businesses in the town centre have welcomed the boost for the community as Oldham Council’s new offices in the Spindles were officially opened today. Over 1000 staff will be based on the upper level of the shopping centre, and businesses are already seeing the benefits of the redevelopment.
Danielle Printer, manager at Waterstones, expressed her delight at the relocation of their bookshop to the ground floor of Spindles, resulting in increased footfall and sales. She praised the outstanding support from the centre management and looked forward to welcoming loyal customers who are Council employees.
Maggie Hughes, owner of Zutti Co and Vice Chair of Oldham Town Deal Board, shared her excitement for the future as the town centre enters a new chapter. She hoped that the redevelopment would attract more visitors and boost trade for local businesses.
Lauren Hughes, manager at The Entertainer, also expressed her enthusiasm for the council’s new offices opening and hoped that it would encourage more people to visit their store and enjoy the improved retail, leisure, and entertainment facilities.
The move is part of Oldham Council’s plan to transform the town centre, including the development of new homes, a park, and the refurbishment of the Spindles with a new market, events space, and archive centre. Moving staff from the Civic Centre to the Spindles is expected to benefit traders and pave the way for the redevelopment of the Civic Centre.
Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, highlighted the positive impact of the new offices on bringing more footfall to the town centre and supporting local businesses. The move also aligns with the council’s goal of creating much-needed homes across Oldham town centre.
Councillor Fida Hussain, Cabinet Member for Business, Employment and Enterprise, emphasised the council’s commitment to supporting local businesses and strengthening the local economy through the opening of the new office space. He looked forward to a bright future for the town.
