Manchester Aquatic Centre to be revamped

£31m plan officially approved

The Manchester Aquatic Centre is getting some much-needed repairs.

The refurbishments to the swimming and gym complex will cost £31m.

According to councillor Luthfur Rahman delaying this decision would’ve cost more.

“Ongoing maintenance costs would rocket. Vital facilities for Manchester people and revenue for the city would be lost as building, mechanical and electrical failures caused more and more unscheduled closures,” he said.

The complex’s heating and electrical systems, along with lifts, spa, moveable floors, pool treatment, and pool lighting will also get upgrades.

Meanwhile, carbon-reduction technologies to replace worn out parts of the building and reduce carbon footprint by 40%.

The leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition, councillor John Leech said the “most expensive option” was the only solution for the long term.

The centre opened in 2000 in preparation for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

The complex boasts two Olympic length pools and a diving pool.

Around 500,000 people use the complex every year. (JSL).
