Film opportunities for young creatives in Leigh

New opportunities to explore different areas of filmmaking for creative young people in Leigh are now available, as part of a Wigan Council led initiative.

Following on from the successful Filming Fund bootcamps in February, the programme is being extended for participants to learn new skills linked to the film industry.

Northern Heart Films, funded by Wigan Council, is offering local young people a chance to gain hands-on experience in film and production this spring.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to build on existing skills, these roles are a great way to get involved.

Councillor Keith Cunliffe, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: “The success of our recent filming bootcamps highlights just how much potential there is among local aspiring filmmakers. We’re proud to continue expanding these opportunities, ensuring even more people can gain valuable experience and grow their skills.

“We’re absolutely delighted to partner with the amazingly talented local business Northern Heart to bring this to life for our young people.”

The opportunities on offer are: work experience placements (10 spots) on various dates in April and May in Leigh. Expenses will be covered and open to applicants aged 16–30 based in Leigh with no prior experience needed.

Also available are two paid runner roles on 30 May 2026 at Leigh Sports Village, paid at the National Living Wage plus expenses and open to applicants aged 16–30 from Leigh, who have basic filmmaking or technical knowledge.

Natasha Hawthornthwaite, Co-Founder Northern Heart Films, said: “These opportunities are the perfect starting point for anyone looking to gain experience on a feature length documentary film.

“The work experience is designed for those with zero experience who want to learn and observe, plus we have two paid entry level roles for those who have some knowledge or experience and are looking for their first freelance job.

“We’re committed to making the film industry more accessible for those living outside of major cities and we can’t wait to meet the next generation of filmmaking talent right here in Leigh.”

Wigan Council recently launched the Filming Fund, committing to re-investing all the fees generated by a prime-time BBC drama production filming at Leigh Town Hall back into the community.

These new opportunities mark an exciting step forward for young creatives in Leigh, opening doors for more local talent to gain real industry experience and take their first steps into the world of filmmaking.
