In Manchester, schools and libraries are celebrating World Book Day by making reading enjoyable and available to thousands of children and their families, nurturing a love for books from a young age.
Various events will take place across the city, including readings by award-winning authors in local schools and libraries, as well as a free book giveaway for everyone. Last year, hundreds of free books were distributed on tram routes, and this year, Manchester Libraries and Read Manchester will be hosting a big book giveaway with over a thousand free books up for grabs at the Forum Wythenshawe.
In addition to the main event on 7 March, Manchester will be hosting nearly two weeks of activities, events, and author visits in schools and libraries. Renowned author and illustrator Nick Sharratt, known for his work with Jacqueline Wilson, is currently touring Manchester’s libraries, engaging with primary school pupils and sharing his vibrant illustrations and storytelling skills.
World Book Day celebrations will continue with author Emma Reynolds delivering online school sessions and Josh Silver visiting high schools to discuss his book ‘Happyhead’ and themes of happiness, self-discovery, and love.
Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Skills, Employment and Leisure, emphasised the importance of World Book Day in inspiring children through reading and engaging with talented authors and illustrators. The aim is to instil confidence and essential skills in children for their future development.
