Rochdale

Significant intersection enhancement commences

The junction where Bury Road, Roch Valley Way, and Sandy Lane meet is set to undergo a significant upgrade, with the addition of four new pedestrian and cycle crossings. This much-needed improvement will greatly enhance safety in the area, as currently there are no pedestrian facilities despite it being a 4-way crossing.

Not only will the new pedestrian crossings be introduced, but the kerbs around each approach will also be slightly re-aligned to further enhance safety. Additionally, there will be changes to the lane designation on Roch Valley Way to improve journeys. As part of the project, the road and pavements surrounding the junction will also be resurfaced.

Councillor Shah Wazir, cabinet member for highways, expressed the importance of this upgrade, stating, “This junction is not only one of the busiest in the borough, but also one of the oldest. It was built according to 1960s standards that are no longer suitable for today’s needs. This scheme will greatly improve safety at this crucial junction and I am confident that the many residents who use it daily will welcome these changes.”

During the works, temporary 4-way traffic lights will be in operation, so motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys. The project is funded by Transport for Greater Manchester and will be carried out by local company J Cooney Limited. It is expected to be completed by the end of May 2024.
