Crackdown on Illegal Off-Road Bikers Returns to Wigan

After a successful crackdown earlier this year, police have relaunched Operation Handbrake to tackle the growing problem of anti-social off-road biking in Wigan.

Wigan, with 70% of its land designated as greenspace, has long been a hotspot for off-road riders illegally using bridleways, canal towpaths, and public rights of way. Authorities report that many riders are travelling from other regions, including Yorkshire, to exploit the open terrain.

With the Easter holidays and summer months approaching, officers are increasing patrols in key areas, including Bickershaw Country Park, Aspull, West Leigh, and Wutchy.

SmartTag Technology Enhances Enforcement

As part of the crackdown, officers are utilizing SmartTag forensic spray, a high-tech, traceable liquid that can be sprayed onto offenders and their vehicles. Each spray has a unique forensic code, allowing authorities to link suspects and bikes to specific offences even if they flee the scene.

Operation Handbrake is a joint initiative between Greater Manchester Police, Wigan Council, and other community safety partners, ensuring continued action against illegal and dangerous riding.
