Oldham Council is encouraging local community groups, schools and charities to apply now for the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) Community Fund before applications close.

There are just a few days left until the Monday 27 October deadline, the £250,000 fund offers grants of £1,000, £5,000, £10,000 or £20,000 to support organisations within five miles of the Transpennine route between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York, or near the Shipley Traincare Centre.

The funding aims to help create or improve community spaces and facilities, as part of TRU’s ongoing commitment to invest in local areas and support the places affected by its work over the coming years.

Applications are managed by Neighbourly, and can be submitted via the TRU Community Fund campaign page at www.thetrupgrade.co.uk/communityfund.

TRU recently visited Support and Action for Women’s Network (SAWN), an Oldham-based charity that supports Black and Asian minority ethnic women. Funding from the TRU Community Fund helped create a new community cabin at SAWN’s Chadderton allotment site.

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “Community organisations like SAWN do incredible work supporting local people, and it’s wonderful to see how TRU funding has enhanced their facilities. I encourage other eligible groups in Oldham and across the route to apply before the deadline.”

TRU colleagues have also been joined by political leaders to visit other 2024 Community Fund recipients, including The Conservation Volunteers in York, a group dedicated to protecting and improving green spaces.

Alex Peters, Interim Head of Sustainability and Social Value for TRU, said: “We’re thrilled with the enthusiasm shown for our second Community Fund and encourage any remaining eligible organisations to submit their applications before the deadline. These grants will help strengthen vital community facilities across the region.”

Questions about applications should be directed to Neighbourly at community@neighbourly.com.
