Be Well announces return of its Big Wigan Walk Week

A popular Wigan Borough walking festival is set to return for a fourth year.

The Big Wigan Walk Week will be back from Saturday 23 May to Sunday 31 May, with around 50 organised walks taking place.

Organised by the council’s Be Well leisure and wellbeing service, the nine-day festival is all about being active, exploring the borough’s beauty spots and celebrating local heritage.

Councillor Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “Walking is amazing for our wellbeing; whether it’s the positive effect it has on our health and fitness, or the way it makes us feel to get out and about, and to connect with other people and the world around us.

“That’s why we’re so pleased to announce our Big Wigan Walk Week will be back for 2026 with lots more interesting and exciting events to enjoy.

“Those who’ve joined us in previous years will know exactly what to expect, and if you’ve never taken part before then you won’t want to miss out.

“You’ll get to discover some wonderful walking routes, learn fascinating facts about nature, our towns and our proud heritage, and meet lots of amazing, friendly people.

“From short, social strolls and relaxed guided tours to longer treks for more seasoned walkers, there’s something for people of all ages and abilities – and, better yet, it’s all completely free.

“So, get ready to lace up your walking boots and book your place at the Big Wigan Walk Week 2026!”

Part of National Walking Month and the wider GM Walking Festival throughout the month of May, the Big Wigan Walk Week also coincides with the May half term school holidays.

Highlights include history walks in Ince and Hindley’s beautiful Borsdane Wood, orienteering at Pennington Flash, and ‘The New Wigan Way’ – an updated version of a nine-mile ramblers’ favourite that ties together Wigan’s iconic Pier Quarter, Haigh Hall and the woodland plantations.

There’s also a walk inspired by the infamous tale of Lady Mabel, an early morning Sunrise Walk from Robin Park, and a ‘Top Lock to Town’ walk along the storied Leeds-Liverpool Canal that will finish with a visit to the Cotton Works.

The festival is also a chance to discover Be Well’s popular weekly walking groups, from Nordic Walking with poles to ‘Walk and Talk’ groups where the focus is on conversation and connection, and Wellbeing Walks with Be Well’s community link workers.

The events are expected to be popular, with 586 walkers attending last year’s festival, and with limited places available residents are encouraged to book early.

You can book via the free Be Well Wigan mobile app (external link) or online booking site (external link) by searching ‘Community Venues’ and ‘Walking’. Those who haven’t booked a Be Well activity before will simply need to create a free booking account at checkout.
